The Cornerstone

The plant-based label is the premise the restaurant starts from, not a constraint it works around, and the menu spends its range proving the point dish by dish rather than announcing it.

The community role is the other half of the place. The Cornerstone runs live music and events downtown, and it keeps a Pay-it-Forward wall — a board where guests can leave a prepaid meal for someone to claim later, no questions asked — which local reporting has pointed to as the part of the restaurant that explains the rest of it. The co-owners tie the wall and the programming together, though their names tend to stay behind the food rather than out in front of it.

The Cornerstone has held its Wyndham Street corner since 2002, long enough to become the kind of downtown address people give as a landmark rather than a destination. That tenure shows less in nostalgia than in use: the same kitchen feeds the morning regular, the lunch crowd, and the pre-show table, and the Pay-it-Forward wall sits there as the clearest tell — a restaurant that has decided the neighbourhood it feeds and the neighbourhood it belongs to are the same thing.
