Donnelly's Pub

8.4Downtown Thorold

Guinness runs through the kitchen at Donnelly's Pub, and rarely as decoration. It braises the onions layered over the fresh-cooked pub chips, deepens the broth in the Irish Onion Soup, and simmers the lamb and root vegetables in a stew that arrives over garlic mashed potatoes with warm bread for dipping. Donnelly's is an Irish pub on Front Street South in downtown Thorold, and it has settled on being two things at once: a comfort-food kitchen and the town's blues room, where the live music is a reason to come rather than something playing behind the plates.

The menu is pub-comfort first, and specific about it. Donnelly's Fish & Chips anchors the list — haddock in a light batter with coleslaw, tartar, and fresh-cut fries, offered baked or breaded on request. Cottage Pie is built from ground beef simmered with carrots, peas, and onions, then capped with rustic garlic mashed potatoes and mixed cheese and oven-baked until it sets. The Lightly Breaded Wings carry a secret light coating and a sauce range that runs from honey garlic and Cajun through lemon pepper, Garlic Parmesan, and Whisky BBQ. Around them sit the Reuben on rye, a Smoked Beef on Weck made with house-smoked roast beef and au jus for dipping, and Irish Nachos assembled on potato chips instead of tortillas. Even the burger is ground in-house: a AAA brisket patty with no fillers, pressed on site and available under Guinness-fried onions, cheddar, and sautéed mushrooms.

What all of this says is that Donnelly's carries its Irish-pub label past the sign out front. The Guinness onions, the Guinness Lamb Stew, the Irish Onion Soup, and the corned-beef Reuben give the kitchen more shape than a generic bar menu, and a vegetarian plate like the spinach and goat cheese salad keeps the list from closing anyone out. The House of Blues billing does the rest. The pub presents itself as Thorold's House of Blues, and in patio season that turns literal, with the music moving outdoors and the food holding its ground beneath it. Donnelly's has decided its identity is a kitchen and a stage, not one propping up the other.

The building carries its own Thorold history. A City Hotel once stood on the Front Street South site where the pub now operates, and the current pub opened in 2008, taking the street's past as its frame rather than inventing one from scratch. That local footing shows up in how Donnelly's spends its time away from the plate. It takes part in the Canal Bank Shuffle, raises money through Community Care, and keeps a standing tie to the Thorold Community Theatre a short walk up the street.

A table finds its own way through the menu without much trouble. A casual group can open with Lightly Breaded Wings and Pub Chips & Dip — fresh-cooked chips under blended cheeses and those Guinness onions — before splitting off toward a burger, a Reuben, or the Irish Nachos, so the order stays shared without turning into a negotiation. The Irish plates keep the meal anchored to the pub's centre of gravity even when the table leans toward bar food. It is a list wide enough to seat a mixed group and specific enough that nobody settles.

For regulars, the week has a shape. Wednesday brings liver and onions, Thursday a pound of wings, Friday and Saturday put fish and chips on all day, and Sunday turns to a pizza-and-wings combo built for a table to share. Those recurring deals make the timing of a visit part of the plan, and takeout runs through a current online menu for the nights the plate travels home. The pub holds its hours Wednesday through Sunday; Monday and Tuesday, it stays dark.
